How does a cake rise?

This week for writing we have been learning to do explanation writing so here is one of my writing pieces.

  1. How to do gymnastics
  2. How to make a batch of cookies
  3. How to find diamonds in minecraft (survival)
  4. How does a bike work
  5. How much does a cake rise - THE WINNER

Plan
The cake rises from the baking powder
The baking powder are little air bubbles that increase in size when it is in the oven. Going to explain how a cake rises and why your cake won’t rise.

Title - I will tell them about how does a cake rise.

Introduction - corn flour makes a cake rise.

Main reason - the cake rises from the air bubbles increasing in size because of the heat from the oven.

The second reason - how much does a cake rise.

The reason behind the second reason -  the cake rises ¼ of an inch.

Conclusion - hope you know how a cake rises and how much does a cake rise.

How does a cake rise.
Cakes are mostly used on special occasions or sometimes just used to show people that you are a good cook. I have always wondered how does a cake rise that is why I will be telling you how does a cake rise.  Some of you probably think that the oven is magic and the cake rises because of the oven. But it is actually from what you put in the cake, the cake rises from something called baking powder, but how does the baking powder make the cake rise.

Baking powder looks like flour but is actually much different. If you have rubbed your hands on baking powder it’s really smooth but their are tiny tiny little air bubbles in baking powder. When the cake is placed in the oven the heat of the oven makes the air bubbles increase in size and the cake rises. If you cut your cake in half you will probably see decently sized air bubbles in the cake.

But what if your cake doesn't rise? There are two reasons why your cake doesn’t rise, one of the reasons is you didn't put enough baking powder in your cake or you didn't put any at all. The second  reason why your cake won't rise is your oven isn't at the right temperature. How much does a cake rise the average length for a cake to rise is ¼ of an inch. But some cakes are different and some recipes are different so some cakes rise differently but the average cake rises ¼ of an inch.

My winter sports team

Winter sports.
Over the winter sport season me and my rugby team played a lot of rugby games, made up of year fives and year six students. Our rugby team turned out really good, the first rugby game we played was against Te papa school. I thought that we wouldn't stand a change but in the end we came out on top. In about the middle of the season me and my team moved to the A grade and there was only 4 teams in the A grade including us.

In the A grade the games were much harder than the games we were playing before we were in the A grade. The fist game we played in the A grade we got smashed bye the Shirley bulldogs, that was a game we would remember. The last game we ever played for the season was against hill view school, it was a really hard game but in the end hill view school came out on top. From the first game to the last game we have improve so much. My fitness has improved a lot since the first game to the last game, all so I think I have got slightly faster when we started rugby.

Does your school have winter sports?

Fast fashion, THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL BOOK about the environment

This term in reading we have been reading about the environment. I have enjoyed reading lots of different types of books and one of my favourite books to read about this year is about climate change. Climate change is interesting to learn about.
For reading this week, my group read the book called THIS IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL BOOK about the Environment.

Now I understand better that using animal skins for something you don't even wear is not right.

How would you feel if you were outside in the cold for six months with no cloths?

I'm about to collapse!

Cross country

On Thursday 2nd of may we started to walk to Walter park on the way to Walter my stomach was filled with butterfly's, not long after we arrived at Walter park. when we got to Walter park the teachers were putting the tarpaulin down as soon as the teachers finished tarpaulin down all the kids ran to sit on it and there was know more room but luckily Aidan came with a back up. after waiting for 2 hours of waiting it was finally our turn to run, I was shaking like a wet dog, on your marks get set GO! I sprinted like a cheater and just like that I almost finessed the first lap when I was about to pass the finish
line for the first lap and everyone cheered for me so I sprinted as fast as I could. we were on our last lap and my legs were about to collapse and I started to get the stitch but I didn't  give up. I could see the finish line  I ran like a hungry pack of Hyeners I leaped to the finish line I was just lucky enough to make it to zones.

PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan.  for our PBL we are going to creating a dance video, on raining days they can still get exercise, on Friday the 5th of April our Hub lead a dance to our dance video and the people who did the best got a chocolate.
Reflection:
For our final product our group I think that everyone that did our dance enjoyed it, especially the people who chocolate.

How did our action build a sense of community in the school? I think the people who did the dance were smiling and I think that smiling is contagious that way it made the school smile.

I contributed by helping pick our idea of doing a dance video and I was one of the dancers in the video, I also bring in a costume in to do the dance and I helped with the action plan and the dance video.

I think the PBL might impact on others because I think that it would put a smile on other people faces especially if they get a chocolate bar.

What I learned about working with others I learned that it was really fun because everyone had a part to do . also it was really fun because the others were enjoying it that way it makes me happy.

pbl market day

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about design and the big question was; How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product?

First we learned what STEAM stood for.
S for Science
T for Technology
E for Engineering
A for the Arts
and M for Maths
Then we were given challenges. The first to make a chair using newspaper, string and straws that was able to hold a figure made out of multi-link blocks.
Then; make a table that was able to balance MnMs for the team. We were much better at the second challenge because … it was fun making it because we had more supplies and it was book character day.

In Literacy we learned to write up science experiments and to write a technology report using the design process of ask, imagine, plan, create, improve and share.

Our next step was to form teams and ask ourselves the big question again.
How can we use a Steam approach to make a marketable product? Our aim was to create enough products or experiences and sell it to raise money for charity.

My team made this…we made crystal sets all you needed was borax, string, crystals and food coloring. We made it because it was different to all of the others and it was cool to learn new things.

Reflection

My highlight from this PBL was…it was surprising to see lots of people come to our stand we sold out super fast. We also had a lot of fun making the crystal sets the poster and painting the containers

Next time I would… next time I think that we should make more because they sold out so fast we were really surprised.
